Straddle Crane Monitoring

Port of Wellington (NZ). Straddle Crane Monitoring.

The Ports of Wellington Container Straddle Cranes needed to ensure that they did not run out of fuel while operational. It was found that the fuel indicators were not particularly accurate and in addition, the Operator may become too focused on operating the crane to notice the low fuel indication. A method of centrally monitoring each crane’s fuel system was devised, whereby data from each one was displayed on a computer screen in the central control office. Salcom provided radio equipment and specific software written for the application to configure and display each units’ fuel level. The efficiency gained from the system in the first year of operation was significant and far outweighed the capital cost of the systems’ development & deployment.
